Ukraine's rapprochement with NATO, contrary to the law on the principles of domestic and foreign policy, could result in the country's involvement in bloody military conflicts provoked by the leadership of the alliance, the second secretary of the central committee of the Communist Party of Ukraine, Ihor Alekseev, has said.

“Back in 2010, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, on the waves of the victory of a new government in the election, secured its non-aligned foreign policy status, thus protecting the country from the possible influence of NATO. However, despite the said legislative act, the Ukrainian authorities are continuing to flirt with this military union. It seems that we are not far from the Yuschenko era in the country’s foreign policy stance,” the party’s press service quoted him as saying.

He also added: “For some reason the authorities are not thinking about the consequences of military operations that are conducted under the auspices of NATO. The United States and Britain, that lord it over NATO, do not want to send their citizens to certain death. Of course, they want to shift this responsibility onto the shoulders of weak countries, one of which is Ukraine.”

He said that Ukraine’s integration into NATO, which is envisaged in the national security strategy, could result in the cooling of the country’s relations with favorable strategic partners.

Alekseev also said that Ukraine should intensify cooperation in the defense sector with Russia.
