You're reading: Constitution envisages no snap presidential and parliamentary elections at people’s initiative

Chairman of the Central Election Commission Volodymyr Shapoval has said that the collection of signatures by participants in the protest movement on Maidan Nezalezhnosti to conduct snap presidential and parliamentary elections will have no judicial consequences, as the constitution does not envisage this.

"If these initiatives really exist, then, first of all, I would advise that the constitution and rulings by the Constitutional Court of Ukraine be read again attentively. They clearly stipulate that the early termination of powers of the agencies of the state government via bringing this issue up for a nationwide referendum at the people’s initiative is impossible," Shapoval said while commenting on reports by a range of Ukrainian mass media on Friday about the possibility of collecting signatures to initiate a referendum on the early termination of powers of the Ukrainian president and the Verkhovna Rada

At the same time, the media liaisons department of the secretariat of the CEC reported on Friday that Shapoval didn’t rule out that initiators of this event had simply had no time to consult lawyers. According to him, in any case, the documents submitted to the CEC regarding the possibility of holding a referendum on the early termination of powers of the president and the parliament would have no legal consequences.
