You're reading: Council of Europe: Ukrainians must conciliate new constitution

Secretary General of the Council of Europe Thorbjorn Jagland has said it is important that the citizens of Ukraine uphold a new constitution.

According to Jagland, Ukraine should together support a version of
the constitution suitable to all, to elect the president through free
and fair elections, and for the future parliament to represent the
interests of the whole Ukraine, with its members being elected under a
law that suits all citizens of Ukraine.

He said this at a briefing after holding talks with acting Foreign Minister of Ukraine, Andriy Deschytsia.

According to Jagland, the Council of Ukraine could help Ukraine in
the context of the strengthening of the rule of law in the country, and
that would be the greatest help to Ukraine that the Council of Europe
could render in this situation.

Besides, the secretary general said it was important to unite the
efforts of the international community to prevent any external
interference in events in Ukraine.
