You're reading: Decision on Landik’s extradition in competence of Russian prosecutors, says Kuzmin

Officials of the Ukrainian Prosecutor General's Office say they expect a decision soon from their Russian colleagues on the extradition of former Luhansk City Council deputy Roman Landik of the Regions Party, who is accused of beating up a young woman.

"A Russian court has decided to keep Landik in custody pending a decision by the Russian Prosecutor General’s Office on his extradition," Acting Ukrainian Prosecutor General Renat Kuzmin said at a press briefing on Thursday.

He added that in accordance with Russian legislation, issues of extradition are resolved exclusively by the authorized prosecutor of the Russian Prosecutor General’s Office.

"Therefore, we expect a decision from the [Russian] Prosecutor General’s Office, and then we’ll see when Landik will be extradited, and how, if such a decision is taken by the Russian authorities," Kuzmin said.

On July 19, the Ukrainian Prosecutor General’s Office sent a request to the Russian Prosecutor General’s Office regarding Landik’s extradition to Ukraine in order to prosecute him on charges of hooliganism.

Earlier, the media reported that Landik beat up a young woman in a restaurant.

This incident was recorded on the video and the clip was posted on the Internet.

The injured woman, aged 20, was hospitalized with concussion and bruises.

On July 7, the prosecutor’s office of Luhansk region opened a criminal case against Landik on charges of disorderly conduct (Part 3 of Article 296) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.

Landik was expelled from the Regions Party and from the party’s faction in Luhansk City Council.

Landik, who was put on the wanted list, was detained near Krasnodar, Russia.

Ukrainian Interior Minister Anatoliy Mohyliov said that Ukraine was doing everything possible to speed up Landik’s extradition from Russia.

On July 20, Krasnodar Court of Russia decided to extradite Landik to Ukraine, Luhansk police said.

Landik is the son of Volodymyr Landik, a member of the Regions Party’s faction at Ukraine’s parliament.
