You're reading: Defense Ministry: 6 Ukrainian servicemen killed, 8 wounded in attack on convoy near Kramatorsk

Six Ukrainian servicemen were killed and eight were wounded when a convoy of the Ukrainian armed forces was ambushed near the town of Kramatorsk, Donetsk region, on Tuesday, the Defense Ministry of Ukraine reported.

“A total of six servicemen of the Armed Forces of Ukraine were killed
in a lengthy fight. Eight others sustained wounds of varying degrees.
One was seriously wounded,” the Defense Ministry said in a statement
posted on its Web site on May 13.

The Defense Ministry reported that the attack on the convoy took
place at 1300 on the outskirts of the village of Oktiabrske, Sloviansk
district, 20 kilometers from the town of Kramatorsk. A convoy of one of
the units of Ukrainian armed forces was fired on in an ambush. The
terrorists fired at the Ukrainian paratroopers from grenade launchers
and small arms, the report reads.

The ministry said that more than 30 attackers arrived at the site in advance and were placed along the river behind the bushes.

“With the first shot from a grenade launcher the terrorists hit the
engine of an armored personnel carrier, which came to the bridge. An
explosion followed. Another APC tried to push the damaged military
vehicle, which caught fire, away from the village,” the Defense Ministry
said.

The ministry reported that all the wounded and the bodies of those killed have been evacuated.
