 NEW YORK STATE - The refreshments at St. Mary the Protectress Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church in Irondequoit Sunday afternoon were decidedly modest: sliced loaves of dark rye bread — no butter — and plastic glasses of water. That’s all.

But that simple meal, offered four days before Thanksgiving, would have
been a feast to 9-year-old Mary Dzus at her eastern Ukrainian home in
1933, the year when millions of Ukrainians perished in a famine
engineered by Joseph Stalin and the Soviet government.
