You're reading: Democratic Party to get in Kyiv Council, Klitschko leads in mayoral race

The UDAR Party (35.2%) and the Batkivschyna all-Ukrainian Union (8.1%) top the rating of parties in the Kyiv Council elections, while Oleksandr Omelchenko's Unity (3.6%), Oleh Tiahnybok's Svoboda party (3.4%), Anatoliy Hrytsenko's "Civil Position" and Oleksiy Mochanov's Democratic Party (both 3.2%) clear the 3% barrier.

This information was made public by the head of research projects at
the Institute for Regional Development of Ukraine Vitaliy Moroz during a
press conference at the Interfax-Ukraine news agency.

According to him, Mykola Katerynchuk’s European Party (2.9%), Oleh
Liashko’s Radical Party (2.9%) and Lesia Orobets’ “Nove Zhyttia” (New
Life) (2.6%) came close to the barrier. The rest of the parties are
supported by less than 2% of Kyiv citizens.

A little over 4% of the respondents are ready to vote against all,
3.4% say they will refuse to participate in the elections and 15% remain
undecided.

The three leaders of mayoral race include UDAR Party leader Vitali
Klitschko, who is supported by 40.4% of voters, candidate from
Batkivschyna all-Ukrainian Union and Head of Kyiv City State
Administration Volodymyr Bondarenko (10.4%) and Mykola Katerynchuk
(7.2%). The rest are as follows: Oleksandr Omelchenko (6.9%), Oleksiy
Mochanov (3.5%), Hennadiy Balashov (2.4%) and Lesia Orobets (1.4%).

A total of 13.2% of surveyed Kyiv citizens remain undecided, 2.2%
don’t support any candidate and a little less than 3% aren’t going to
the elections.

“There’s a contradiction between understanding the need for
systematical change in the state and local government structures and
relying on previous ‘experience’ and candidates’ ‘competence.’ This
duality of Kyiv citizens’ election preferences eliminates the
possibility of systemic change itself,” communication expert Dmytro
Hormakov said, commenting on the survey.

In addition, he said that the increase of the support for Democratic
Party in the conditions of a short election campaign shows the serious
potential of new political projects that meet voters’ requirement to see
“new faces” in power.
