You're reading: Duma sees no signs of settlement in Ukraine after Poroshenko wins presidential elections

The hopes that situation in Ukraine will stabilize following the presidential elections were not met and the parliamentary potential of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) should be involved, the Russian State Duma said.

“Russia hoped that Petro Poroshenko’s victory at the presidential
elections in Ukraine would become a turning point in the country’s
tragic history of the past several months and would begin the movement
to common sense, from violence to constructive dialogue and toward
Ukraine overcoming its political and constitutional crisis. However,
this did not happen,” head of State Duma committee for the CIS affairs,
Eurasian integration and ties with compatriots Leonid Slutsky said.

On the contrary, a new cycle of violence occurs in Ukraine – forceful
cleansing involving arms is carried out in Donetsk and civilians are
killed, Slutsky said. “Civil war is underway – Kyiv fights with its own
people. Poroshenko’s arrival has not stopped the violence but
accelerated the growth of violence and civilian casualties in Donbas,”
he said.

This situation can not be accepted, Slutsky said. “We are obliged to
involve all resources and potential, including parliamentary diplomacy,
in particular at the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly level, in order to
encourage the Ukrainian authorities to stop the punitive operation –
this is the most important task for the entire global community,” he
said.
