You're reading: Election watchdog releases parallel vote count following hacker attack

Local election watchdog OPORA announced this morning the results of its parallel vote count that sampled 1,000 polling stations on election day.

When factoring in the margin of error, the proportional
election results matched the order and percentage of votes garnered by each
party in comparison with official results so far.

As of 10:19 a.m. the Central Election
Commission had processed 97.75 percent of votes that will decide how parties will
divide half the seats in parliament, or 225 spots.

Using also mechanical people counters on
election day, OPORA’s observers said voter turnout was at 57 percent, one
percent less than the official turnout.

OPORA’s results came two days late because
the group said it came under a denial-of-service attack from some 2,500 computer
servers, mostly located in China, Mongolia and South Korea.

Because of delays processing results at
several district election commissions, OPORA hasn’t released the results of its
vote count of 10 single-mandate races where it had full coverage.

“OPORA has registered delays in the vote
count process at precinct election commissions and their acceptance at the
district election commissions,” said OPORA in a statement today. “The events
that transpire after the election at certain district election commissions are
indications there are attempts to interfere with the vote count results at single-mandate
districts. Nearly one-third of district election commissions are hot spots in
the election campaign.”
