You're reading: EU provides over €1 million for prevention of rabies in Ukraine

The European Commission's Directorate General for Health and Consumer Protection has provided more than €1 million for the creation of a buffer zone in four Ukrainian regions to prevent the spread of rabies. 

According to the official Web site of the Agricultural Policy and Food Ministry of Ukraine, a buffer zone with an area of 70 square kilometers will be established in Volyn, Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk and Zakarpattia regions, which border the EU.

“The European Union conducts the immunization of wild animals on its territory in order to stop the spread of rabies. The Directorate General for Health and Consumer Protection has earmarked more than EUR 1 million to create a buffer zone of 70 square kilometers encompassing Volyn, Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk and Zakarpattia regions,” Head of the State Veterinary and Biosecurity Service of Ukraine Volodymyr Horzheyev said.

According to him, Ukraine annually assigns an average of about UAH 100 million for animal epidemic countermeasures, including more than Hr 42 million for the prevention of rabies, in particular for the vaccination of farm animals and wild animals in five regions.
