Poland will always support Ukraine in its European integration course, European Parliament Vice-President Jacek Protasiewicz has said.

“We, the Poles, have always kept the door [to the European Union] open, and we will always support you,” he said at a people’s assembly on Independence Square in Kyiv on Sunday, adding that he speaks on behalf of the Polish president and the Polish prime minister.

He said that “despite the fact that [Ukrainian] President [Viktor] Yanukovych has refused to sign an Association Agreement in Vilnius, the EU’s doors remain open for Ukraine.”

The leader of the Polish Law and Justice opposition party, Jaroslaw Kaczynski, expressed the position of European Parliament President Martin Schulz that the EU has no doubt that Ukraine will be part of the EU and that it is already walking this path.

“The European Union needs you,” he said.

He also added that there is no forgiveness for those who are responsible for bloodshed during the dispersal of peaceful protests on Independence Square.

“Those who are responsible for the use of force must be punished,” Kaczynski said
