You're reading: Foreign Ministry: Situation in east Ukraine must not thwart EU deal

The situation in east Ukraine must not affect the timeframe for the signing of an association agreement with the European Union regarding the creation of a free trade area, according to the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry.

“I hope it won’t affect it,” Director of the Ministry’s EU Department Vsevolod Chentsov told reporters.

Though the situation in the east will impact the political stability
in Ukraine overall, it should not cause a delay in the signing of the EU
document, he said.

Asked whether the EU FTA will be effective in Crimea, he said: “It is
too soon to say what regime exactly will be established for this
territory. However, this matter is certainly being studied.”

“Today we are not discussing when, where or how. The main thing is
for the voting process to be held without complications, for the
elections to be completed. We are not in talks over the text of the
agreement: it has been approved, the text is not changing,” the diplomat
said.
