BERLIN — German doctors say they've held constructive talks with their counterparts and authorities in Ukraine and will continue helping to treat former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko.

Karl Max Einhaeupl, the head of Berlin’s Charite hospital, traveled with two colleagues this week to Kharkiv, where Tymoshenko — sentenced to seven years in prison for abuse of power — is being treated for a chronic back ailment at a closely guarded hospital ward.

The German doctors have examined her and helped supervised her treatment.

Einhaeupl said in a statement Wednesday that meetings with local doctors were “positive” and the German team also had “constructive talks” with Ukraine’s health minister.

He said there’s been some improvement in Tymoshenko’s condition but experts believe she needs eight weeks of “stress-free treatment” to stabilize her recovery.
