You're reading: Government approves strategy for development of activity in Chornobyl zone

The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine has approved a strategy for the realization of state policy in the sphere of the development of activities in certain zones contaminated by radioactivity from the Chornobyl disaster. 

The relevant document was approved under governmental resolution No. 535-r of July 18.

The document proposes to study the question of the placement in the Chornobyl zone of a smelting plant, with the subsequent use of the metal in the production of containers for the storage of radioactive waste.

According to the strategy, in the exclusion zone it is also planned to develop facilities for the decontamination of equipment and materials for their further economic use.

In addition, it is planned to consider the question of the construction in the exclusion zone of wood cogeneration plants and the question of growing and burning energy crops (rapeseed, energy willow) in the Chornobyl zone. In this way, it is planned to fix some of the radionuclides in the soil.

The strategy also proposes studying the construction of wind and solar power plants in the exclusion zone.
