You're reading: Inflation in Ukraine in February accelerates to 0.6%

Consumer prices in Ukraine in February 2014 increased by 0.6%, and since the beginning of the year - by 0.8%, the State Statistics Service has said.

According to its data, in annual terms (compared to the same month last year) inflation accelerated from 0.5% to 1.2%.

Over the past year, consumer prices in Ukraine rose by 0.5%, whereas a
year ago they were down by 0.2%. The national budget for 2014 is based
on the inflation forecast of 8.3%.

According to the service, prices for food and non-alcoholic beverages
on the consumer market in February rose by 1.3% compared to the
previous month. The prices of fruit (8.6%), especially bananas (17.2%),
apples (8.9%), and citrus fruits (4.1%) rose most of all. Prices of
vegetables grew by 5.9%, in particular cabbage 26%, onions – 8.9%, and
potatoes – by 8.8%. Prices for sugar, rice, butter, sour cream, milk
products, cheese, fish and fish products, and cereals were up by
3.4-0.9%. At the same time, a 2.6% decrease was seen in prices for eggs,
1-0.5% – pork, poultry, sunflower oil, and lard.

Last month, the increase in prices for alcoholic drinks and tobacco
goods by 0.9% was mainly due to the rise in prices for tobacco products
by 1.3%.

The growth of prices (tariffs) for housing, water, electricity, gas
and other fuel by 0.2% was primarily due to higher prices for liquefied
gas by 2.6% and housing rent rates by 0.9%.

Prices in the health sector rose by 0.9% due to the rise in prices of pharmaceutical products by 1.4%.

According to the service, in February compared to January of the
current year the increase in transport prices as a whole by 2.1% was
primarily due to the rise in car prices by 5.3%, fuels and oils by 4.1%.
In addition, payment for passenger transportation by rail was up by
0.8%.

Prices in the field of recreation and culture increased by 1.2%
mainly due to the increase in the cost of tourist services by 9.5%.
