In connection with the situation surrounding former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, Poland's opposition Law and Justice Party has called for a boycott of Euro 2012 matches in Ukraine, as well as for further pressure on the Ukrainian authorities, the Rzeczpospolita newspaper has reported.

"In connection with political events in Ukraine, as well as the situation surrounding the imprisoned Yulia Tymoshenko, Law and Justice is calling for a boycott of matches of the European Football Championship to be held in Ukraine, as well as for further pressure on the Ukrainian authorities," the party leader, Jaroslaw Kaczynski, said in a statement released on Thursday.

He said that the Ukrainian government’s actions with respect to the opposition, particularly Tymoshenko, "should meet a strong reaction from Polish and European politicians."

"In this context, statements to boycott Euro 2012 matches in Ukraine, which were made by some European governments, are encouraging," Kaczynski said.
