You're reading: Kalman Mizsei appointed EU Advisory Mission Ukraine head

Former EU Special Representative for Moldova Kalman Mizsei has been appointed head of the EU Advisory Mission for Civilian Security Sector Reform Ukraine (EUAM Ukraine), the Council of the European Union said.

EUAM Ukraine, established by the Council on July 22, will be an
unarmed, non-executive civilian mission. EU advisers will initially
focus on supporting the elaboration of revised security strategies and
the rapid implementation of reforms.

The mission will be located in Kyiv, its mandate is designed for two years.

The EU Foreign Ministers approved the mission’s budget until Nov. 30, 2014, at 2.68 million euros.

Mizsei, who is 59 years old, has been Adjunct Professor at the
Central European University since 2006, where he teaches courses on
Globalization and Global Governance and East European economic and
political transition after 1989.

During this period he also worked as EU Special Representative for
the Republic of Moldova (2007-2011) – engaging with all five countries
in the 5+2 format, so including Ukraine and Russia – and, for the Open
Society Institute, as Co-Chairman of the Roma Policy Board and Chairman
of the Board for Making the Most of EU Funds for Roma Inclusion.

His previous post, held from 2001-2006, was at the level of Assistant
Secretary-General of the UN, directing the UNDP Regional Bureau for
Europe and the CIS.

Much of the early part of his career was spent in the Hungarian
banking sector, including the National Bank of Hungary (1990-1995) and
as the Chairman of both the Hungarian Export Import Bank and Hungarian
Export Credit Insurance Ltd. (1995-1997).
