The UDAR faction in the future Verkhovna Rada will initiate the holding of local elections in Kyiv in May 2013, UDAR Party leader Vitali Klitschko has said.

“We will do everything we can to return local government to Kyiv. We have prepared the respective bills, and we will initiate the holding of a mayoral election and elections to Kyiv City Council next May,” Klitschko said on the sidelines of the city council on Thursday.

He also said that the UDAR faction in parliament would seek the adoption of a law envisaging the holding of the mayoral election in Kyiv over two rounds.

At the same time, Klitschko said he was satisfied that the opposition had won the elections in Kyiv on party lists and in single-seat constituencies, and that none of Party of Regions representatives had got into parliament.

“Buckwheat has not currently worked, and residents of Kyiv did not make a mistake,” Klitschko said.

As reported, on July 12, a total of 110 members of Kyiv City Council voted for the early termination of office of Kyiv Mayor Leonid Chernovetsky on the basis of his resignation letter.

According to the council’s decision, the city council’s secretary, Halyna Hereha, temporarily acts as the mayor of the capital city.

Chernovetsky tendered his resignation on June 1.
