You're reading: Klitschko: Ukraine government wants ‘civilized’ relations with Russia

Vitali Klitschko, leader of Ukraine's UDAR party, has said his country's new leadership wants "civilized and predictable relations with Russia."

“It is not only the sovereignty of Ukraine but the entire European security structure that is under threat. The structure that has guaranteed stability and peace for the European continent. We want civilized and predictable relations with Russia. There remains a chance to settle the crisis in a diplomatic way,” an UDAR statement quoted Klitschko as saying at a meeting in Paris with French President Francois Hollande.

Klitschko said Ukraine’s new government needed political stability to be able to focus on economic reforms in order to pull the country out of its crisis and build closer ties with the European Union.

He urged the EU to sign a planned association agreement with Ukraine as soon as possible.

The UDAR statement said Klitschko also planned meetings with political experts, journalists and members of the local ethnic Ukrainian community during his current visit to Paris.
