Warsaw - Poland has supported and will continue to support the European aspirations of Ukraine, Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski has said after a meeting with his Ukrainian counterpart Viktor Yanukovych.

"I would like to express my pleasure to again meet with Mr. Yanukovych and that we are working together to create this great chance – Ukraine’s drawing closer to the European Union," Komorowski said at a briefing in Warsaw on Thursday.

He noted that there would be a good occasion to discuss the European aspirations of Ukraine at the EU’s Eastern Partnership summit.

"This is a very good occasion to sum up the achievements of Ukraine on its path towards [joining] European structures," Komorowski said.

He congratulated Ukraine on its progress in drafting an agreement on the creation of a free trade area with the EU and described this as an important step.

"But we must realize that Ukraine is still facing a very great task – the talks on association. Ukraine and Poland are facing a very complicated and difficult process related to the ratification of these agreements," Komorowski said.

"I want to congratulate my colleague Viktor Yanukovych on [Ukraine’s] EU integration progress, and I want to assure you that Poland will certainly support the aspirations of Ukraine – our most important neighbor," he said.

Komorowski wished Ukraine success and expressed confidence that this success would be a success not only for Ukraine, but also for Poland and the EU.
