You're reading: Kuchma: Yatsenyuk’s resignation could have unpredictable consequences

The announcement by Arseniy Yatsenyuk of his resignation as the prime minister raises deep concerns as this event might have unpredictable consequences for the state and the entire Ukrainian society, said Ukraine's second president Leonid Kuchma.

“For me, the resignation announcement was a real shock and raises
deep concern. An experienced economist and manager, a responsible
politician quits the post of the head of government at an extremely
difficult time for the state. Under his leadership, the government was
seen, almost for the first time in the past few years, not floating on a
populist wave but implementing pragmatic, unpopular measures to rectify
the disastrous situation Ukraine now is in,” said Kuchma, commenting on
the government resignation at Interfax’ request.

According to Kuchma, the announcement of his resignation was due to
the failure of the recent government initiatives in Verkhovna Rada and
the break-up of the parliamentary coalition. “All this might cause
another stage of a political crisis and have unpredictable consequences
for the state and the entire Ukrainian society,” Kuchma said.

At the same time, he stressed that no one questions the need for
early parliamentary elections. However, the parliamentarians, especially
those who were in the coalition, must not forget the difficult economic
and social problems facing the government, the parliament and the
society as a whole.

“So it is expedient for the current Cabinet, which has demonstrated
its ability to adopt anti-crisis measures under extreme conditions, to
continue its work until the parliamentary elections and have the support
of Verkhovna Rada,” Kuchma said.
