You're reading: Kyiv and Brussels start second stage of local development project

Kyiv/Brussels, May 31 (Interfax-Ukraine) – First Vice Premier and Economic Development and Trade Minister of Ukraine Andriy Kliuyev and European Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighborhood Policy Stefan Fule in Brussels on Tuesday signed an agreement between the Ukrainian government and the European Commission on financing the Community Based Approach to Local Development project – stage two, the press service of the Ukrainian first vice premier has reported.

The general cost of the project is EUR 17.5 million, of which EUR 17 million is financed by the European Union, and EUR 0.5 million by the United Nations Development Program.

The target of the project is to assist in the stable social and economic development of Ukraine at the local level.

The project is also aimed involving citizens in decision-taking processes.

A central place in the realization of the project will be given to the development of the institutional capabilities of local government agencies and local government, as well as those of non-governmental organizations.

The project is aimed at raising the level of energy efficiency and the use of alternative energy sources at the local level.

This concerns proper energy planning and the efficient use of energy by local communities and administrations, district and regional councils, and better information provision for the public in this sphere.

An Interfax-Ukraine correspondent reported that at a press conference after the signing ceremony Kliuyev said that "interesting projects on energy supply, energy efficiency" aimed at the settlement of such issues as water supply, drainage systems, and the cleaning of territory were realized at the first stage of the program.
