You're reading: Kyiv Court of Appeals leaves Volha under arrest

Kyiv Court of Appeals on Tuesday upheld a Pechersky District Court ruling of Sept 7, 2011 extending the arrest of former Head of the State Commission for Financial Service Markets Regulation Vasyl Volha to four months.

An Interfax-Ukraine reporter said that the court had rejected an appeal lodged by Volha’s lawyer, Yevhenia Solodko.

On Sept 7, the Pechersky District Court decided to arrest Volha on the basis of a statement from an investigator of the prosecutor’s office, who stressed the need to extend Volha’s arrest in order to conduct a large amount of investigative work, draw up an indictment and familiarize the defendant and his lawyers with the case materials.

The prosecutor’s office said that while at liberty, Volha could hinder the establishment of the truth in the case, exert pressure on witnesses and avoid pre-trial investigation.

Volha was detained on July 19. On July 20, the Pechersky District Court in Kyiv ruled to place him in custody for two months.

On July 25, Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych dismissed Volha as head of the State Commission for Financial Service Markets Regulation "due to a violation of an oath of civil servant."
