You're reading: Kyiv police estimates 16,000 believers at religious events in last two days

A total of 16,000 people participated in the mass religious events in Kyiv on July 27 and July 28, no serious violations of law and order were recorded, the Kyiv police communications department said.

“The religious events with the mass participation of the citizens were held in the capital on July 27-28. The number of the believers was about 16,000,” the statement posted on the Kyiv police’s official website said.

Over 4,000 Kyivan law enforcement officials and the Ukrainian National Guard servicemen were providing order and security. The policemen worked in foot patrols and mobile groups, which were tasked with provision of security of the participants in the events and prevention of the acts of disruptive behavior, provocations and other breaches of law.

Andriy Kryschenko, the chief of the Main Department of the National Police for the city of Kyiv, said that no serious violations of law and order were recorded during these two days. “All security measures and preventive work, which was carried out the day before, had an effect aimed at security, law and order and freedom of the peaceful gatherings,” he said.

As reported, according to the Kyiv police, a total of 10,000 people gathered at the St. Volodymyr Hill waiting for the prayer on the Day of Christianization of Rus and subsequently participated in the sacred procession of the Moscow Patriarchate’s Ukrainian Orthodox Church on July 27.

At the same time, the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate estimated over than 30,000 believers gathered at the St. Volodymyr Hill and 80,000 participants in the sacred procession.

On July 28, the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Kyiv Patriarchate is holding the religious events with the mass participation of the citizens on the occasion of the Day of Christianization of Rus.
