You're reading: Kyiv Post reverts to old website; website developer reports hack

After a two-day test launch, the Kyiv Post has reverted to its old website while a newer version goes offline so that its developer, Kyiv-based Deco Agency, can investigate a security breach and fix critical errors that hampered the success of the Aug. 22 launch.

Website developer Deco Agency reported to the Kyiv Post that an attack on the website occurred after midnight on Aug. 24 and was detected quickly. The attack led to the elimination of the news archives. The website was shut down, data restored from back-up files and the site went back online about 6 a.m.

Deco Agency reported the breach to the Kyiv Post about 11 a.m. on Aug. 24, contributing to the newspaper’s immediate decision to put its previous website online. The Kyiv Post is still investigating the company’s explanation for the temporary loss of data from the virus attack and awaiting a report from Deco Agency.

In any case, the Kyiv Post keeps no confidential information on its servers. Subscriptions are processed by separate online payment companies — paddle.com and paymentwall.com — whose security has never been breached.

Deco Agency CEO Olexiy Fedorov has assured the Kyiv Post that the problems with the new version of the website will be fixed by Sept. 1. Then the newspaper will re-test the website internally. Until the Kyiv Post staff is assured that the new website will properly function, the current website will remain in use.

“We apologize to the readers, subscribers and advertisers for the inconvenience of the past two days, with slow speeds and an improperly functioning website,” Kyiv Post chief editor Brian Bonner said. “But we expect to have the new and improved website back online as soon as the technical problems are fixed, as the contracted developer has promised.”
