MINSK - Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has instructed security agencies to "deal instantly" with Belarusian citizens who fought in eastern Ukraine, no matter on which side.

“Some so-called brave people, that is, gunmen who fought in Donbas, have showed off with weapons in Minsk. There can’t be any showoffs or gunmen in the country,” state-run Belarusian media outlets quoted Lukashenko as saying at a conference dealing with border issues on Jan. 14.

“The attitude toward these warriors who fought in Ukraine on this or that side is well-known,” Lukashenko said. “Deal instantly with them, together with police and the KGB [the State Security Committee],” he said.

It was reported earlier that two Belarusians suspected of involvement in hostilities in Ukraine had been detained in the country.

Belarusian Interior Minister Igor Shunevich had said earlier that dozens of criminal cases might be opened against Belarusians fighting in Donbas.
