You're reading: Lutsenko: Opposition should hold dialog with voters in order to win

Former Ukrainian Interior Minister Yuriy Lutsenko has called on the opposition political parties, in order to get victory and improve voter support, to focus on their work with the people directly, rather than through television.

An Interfax-Ukraine reporter said that on Wednesday evening, while delivering his last statement at a meeting of Kyiv Court of Appeals, Lutsenko made a political statement, but did not justify himself before the court. In his statement, the ex-minister cited famous writers, politicians and philosophers.

“Victory is impossible without the involvement in the political process of the community, streets and squares, as the basis of the democratic process. And it is impossible, by the way, to urgently organize serious popular support on Monday at 10:00. A Maidan cannot be organized merely at somebody’s request. It was and will be only the result of long sincere and concerted efforts of the people and opposition leaders. In these elections, those who understood the importance of personal dialog with voters doubled their result. Those who ignored this work and comfortably ‘broadcasted’ only from TV received a result worsen than expected,” he said.

Lutsenko also said that the actions of opposition political parties that made it into parliament would depend on the ranking of a concrete leader and the opposition as a whole.

“A split after elections is of no benefit to anyone. If the personal influence of [former Prime Minister] Yulia Tymoshenko can be taken into account in Batkivschyna’s result, then the leaders of the opposition factions – [Arseniy] Yatseniuk, [Vitali] Klitschko and [Oleh] Tiahnybok – have roughly equal starting ratings of 12-15%. Consequently, all will depend on their actions in a new parliament, which will be a decisive test of their true abilities and intentions,” he said.
