ST. PETERSBURG – Ukraine will study the possible pros and cons of joining the Customs Union of Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan, Verkhovna Rada Chairman Volodymyr Lytvyn told reporters in St. Petersburg on May 17.

"We need to carefully consider the possible prospects (for joining the Customs Union)," Lytvyn said.

He noted that the Customs Union is seen primarily as an economic project and the potential pros and cons of entering into it are carefully examined by the participants of the CIS, including Ukraine.

Lytvyn has said one should not throw away the existing possibilities of the Commonwealth but make use of them instead. He recalled that they had already attempted to adopt a law on free economic zones, but this project had not been ratified.

Lytvyn also said he disagreed with the statement that the Interparliamentary Assembly of CIS countries was a kind of organization for divorce.

He said that this organization continued to address important issues of the Commonwealth.
