You're reading: Mayoral election in Kyiv could take place in July

The situation with the mayoral election in Kyiv will become clear by the middle of May, Chairman of the Committee of Voters of Ukraine (CVU) Oleksandr Chernenko has said.

"According to current information, the elections should be held in July and most likely on July 15," he said in an interview with Interfax-Ukraine on Wednesday.

At the same time, he noted that according to the law on local elections, the Verkhovna Rada should take a decision on the holding of such elections no later than 60 days before election day. Thus, if the elections are to be held on July 15, the parliament should take such a decision in late April or early May, he said.

Chernenko also recalled that under the law, the electoral campaign on local elections should start 50 days before election day, in this case, in the second half of May.

At the same time, Our Ukraine-People’s Self-Defense MP Yuriy Kliuchkovsky said that a decision on the date of the mayoral election in Kyiv would be purely political.

"It will be a purely political decision. It will be taken when it is [politically] expedient," he said.
