Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has backed the statement by the Russian Foreign Ministry regarding the trial against ex-Ukrainian prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko.

"This is the position of the entire Russian leadership," Medvedev told journalists in Sochi.

"We understand how Tymoshenko is being tried and for what. She is being tried for the accords with Russia, not for the past sins," he said.

Earlier the Russian Foreign Ministry urged Ukraine to ensure an impartial trial against Tymoshenko, and confirmed that the 2009 gas agreements were signed on the basis of the necessary instructions from the Russian and Ukrainian presidents.
