You're reading: Miller: Ukraine must pay gas debt for talks to continue

Ukraine must pay its debt for gas in order for talks to continue, and the situation has not changed, Gazprom CEO Alexei Miller and Energy Minister Alexander Novak said in Vienna on June 24.

Asked about the possibility of restoring gas talks, Miller told
journalists: “As concerns Ukraine, Ukraine must pay on its debt.”

He added that debt for November-December was $1.451 billion and that
Ukraine must pay another $500 million for April-May, which shows the
progress made in these two months as concerns settling the gas debt.

“Therefore, our position on talks is simple and laconic: we cannot
allow talks to lead to Ukraine’s debt towards Russia, towards Gazprom,
to grow all the time, and this is the very situation that has unfolded
in the last several months,” Miller said.
