 Moldovan border police have enhanced control at the border with Ukraine due to situation escalation in the Odessa region. "Border guards enhanced the border with Ukraine," National Border Police Director Dorin Purice told Interfax on May 6. Control has been tightened due to the order of the Moldovan authorities, who have just discussed measures to enhance border control due to situation escalation in Ukraine's Odessa region bordering Moldova, Purice said.

 “The procedure on compulsory registration of foreign citizens still operates. At the same time, it is the responsibility of citizens themselves, who are warned about the necessity to register in offices of the bureau on migration and asylum at the border or upon arriving in Moldova,” Purice said.

The measures to enhance control will be taken at Moldova’s western border as well, he said.

Border police have recently discovered a criminal group, which assisted Afghani citizens willing to go to the EU by entering Romania illegally via Moldova, he said.

Moldovan President Nicolae Timofti, Parliament Chairman Igor Corman, Prime Minister Iurie Leanca and law enforcement authority heads have just discussed the situation the country amid the recent events in Ukraine. Moldovan leaders have ordered the law enforcement authorities to control the situation at the border meticulously and take measures necessary to ensure public order in Moldova.
