No serious incidents were reported during New Year celebrations on Independence Square in Kyiv, but on Jan. 1 unknown people tried to start a fire on the ninth floor at the House of Trade Unions, where the headquarters of pro-EU demonstrators is located.

The Maidan commandants, MPs Stepan Kubiv (Batkivschyna), Mykhailo Blavatsky (Svoboda) and Serhiy Averchenko (UDAR) said this at a briefing at the national resistance headquarters on Thursday.

“New Year’s Eve passed here, most importantly, without incidents, without problems, without big scuffles,” Kubiv said.

“We are grateful to the people of Kyiv and all Maidan participants for self-organization, a responsible attitude and the maintenance of order,” he said.

He said that about two million people had visited the Ukrainian capital’s main square on New Year’s Eve.
