U.S. President Barack Obama hopes to meet with his Ukrainian counterpart in March 2012.

Obama has sent a letter to Yanukovych, the Ukrainian president’s press service reported on Friday.

"Barack Obama expressed the hope to meet with the Ukrainian president at the second summit on nuclear security to be held in Seoul in March 2012," the press service said.

Obama wrote he was looking forward to joining the summit and hoping to meet with the Ukrainian president. Working together, the two countries will ensure the success of the Seoul summit and help better protect the world from nuclear terrorism, Obama wrote, according to the press service.

The United States welcomes Ukraine’s efforts to do away with high-enriched uranium, he said.

Since the historic meeting in Washington in April 2010, the two countries have witnessed relentless steps to enhance nuclear materials safety globally and to strengthen the common effort to prevent the smuggling of nuclear materials, Obama was quoted as saying.
