Cyprus supports Ukraine's entry in the European Union, Secretary General of the Central Committee of the Progressive Party of Working People of Cyprus Andros Kyprianou has said.

“We support Ukraine’s entry in the EU. The official position of the government of Cyprus is based on absolute and entire support for Ukraine’s association with the EU,” he said at a press conference hosted by Interfax-Ukraine on Friday.

According to him, Cyprus positively treats the expansion of the EU if candidates for membership fulfill all of their obligations.

Kyprianou also said that Cyprus supports the soonest possible signing of the Ukraine-EU Association Agreement. According to him, this issue will be discussed during the upcoming visit of Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych to Cyprus. The visit is scheduled for November 2012.

“We will do everything possible to develop this cooperation in positive direction,” he said.

While analyzing the current state of relations between Cyprus and Ukraine, Kyprianou said that the countries have deepened their relations in recent time. The politician recalled a visit of the president of Cyprus to Kyiv in 2011, which achieved many results and noticeably stimulated further cooperation.

President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias made an official visit to Ukraine on July 3-5, 2011.
