You're reading: Official: Yanukovych has no opinion on language problem

Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has changed his position regarding the language issue seven times, Leader of the Civil Position Party Anatoliy Hryschenko has said.

“This always happens before elections – official or not, official or not… So, let’s voice the truth – Viktor Fedorovych Yanukovych does not have any opinion on language,” the party’s press service cited Hrytsenko as saying on Thursday.

He added that in private conversations Regions Party members often say that the language law is an obviously pre-election strategy.

“People understand that perfectly. They don’t do good things in such a way. If it was a good law, they would not have passed it in such a crude way through violations of the regulations,” the politician said.

Hrytsenko added that any law, starting with a ban on television and ending with declaration of a monarchy, could be passed in such a crude way.

According to the politician, the passing of the document and the language issue in general is an attempt by the authorities to distract the attention of society from social problems. Hrytsenko added that Yanukovych “was even a bit happy” when they did not let him hold the press conference in the Ukrainian House, as he avoided awkward questions from journalists.
