The EU must take steps to react to the positive signals that recently came from Ukraine, Former President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) Mevlut Cavusoglu has said.

“I think that our colleagues in EU must take definite positive steps towards Ukraine as well. Signing of Association Agreement could be the best response to the actions of Ukrainian president at this stage,” Cavusoglu said in a report concerning decision of Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych to pardon Ukraine’s ex-interior minister Yuriy Lutsenko.

He noted that the release of Lutsenko, who, according to EU, was imprisoned for political reasons, was one of the key demands of Europe.

“The president clearly showed what he could do. I don’t know could he do such thing regarding Tymoshenko, but he has already sent a positive signal. He did everything he could do, I’m absolutely sure of this. The decision [to pardon Lutsenko] is a signal that means Ukraine is ready to cooperate with the European institutions, especially with the EU,” the official said.

However, the Turkish politician refused to comment a possible pardoning of ex-premier Yulia Tymoshenko, saying non-interference in the judicial procedures of uncompleted legal processes was a key principle of his, and he recommended other politicians do likewise.
