International observers from the Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (IPA) of the CIS member states have started the long-term monitoring of the elections to the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.

On Wednesday, employees of the International Institute of Monitoring Democracy Development, Parliamentarianism and Suffrage Protection for the Citizens of the CIS IPA Member Nations Andrei Baranov and Sergei Karavaev made a working visit to the Central Election Commission of Ukraine and had a working meeting with the commission’s members, Yuriy Donchenko and Oleksandr Chupakhin.

“We talked about the formation of a group of observers, and the principles and methods of the work of CIS IPA observers. We got answers to our questions regarding the formation of district election commissions and the process of the registration of candidates, and the peculiarities of the work of the Central Election Commission, taking into account the amendments introduced to the electoral law in Ukraine,” the deputy director of the institute, Baranov, told Interfax-Ukraine.

He said that a group of observers from the CIS Inter-Parliamentary Assembly would consist of about 25-30 people on Election Day in Ukraine and that most of them would be MPs and senators from CIS parliaments.

“Ahead of the voting day the CEC will get our report on the long-term monitoring of the elections, which, after the voting results are summed up, will be posted on the Web site of the CIS Inter-Parliamentary Assembly,” Baranov said.
