Israeli President Shimon Peres paid tribute to the victims of the Babyn Yar ravine in Kyiv on Thursday and laid a wreath at the memorial complex.

An Interfax-Ukraine reporter said that a guard of honor had met the Israeli president near the Babyn Yar complex.

After laying flowers, the participants in the ceremony observed a minute of silence to honor the victims. Peres then laid a wreath at the Menorah monument to the Jews, which is also located on the territory of Babyn Yar.

The flower-laying ceremony was attended by Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman and Deputy Foreign Minister Oleksandr Horin.

Babyn Yar was a site of mass executions by the Nazis for two years – from September 29, 1941 to September 29, 1943. The number of victims, who were of various nationalities, exceeded 150,000 people.
