Ukrainian police have determined that a 36-year-old citizen of Germany died of self-immolation in Zaporizhia in the early hours of July 29, the communications department of the Zaporizhia regional police reported.

The woman arrived in the city a week before the tragedy, the source said.

According to the report, the woman left her hotel in the morning of July 27. “Around 02:00 a.m., the woman bought five liters of gasoline in a container that she had with her at a gas station near a bus terminal. A dashboard camera later recorded an unknown individual approaching a kiosk, after which flames erupted,” the report said.

The video materials taken from dashboard cameras and security cameras obtained during the pre-trial investigation indicate that the woman had committed suicide without any assistance, the police said. The purpose of the woman’s visit to Ukraine and the motives for her suicide are now being determined.

The local portal Voice of Zaporizhia earlier reported, citing eyewitnesses, that the woman bought a five-liter gas container and then poured it on herself and set fire to herself. The woman was completely incinerated, as was the nearby kiosk.

“The gas station staff said the woman was dressed well and had a lot of money with her. Before committing self-immolation, the woman drank a bottle of beer,” the report said.
