You're reading: Police: Over 24,000 Hasidic pilgrims to celebrate Rosh Hashanah in Uman

Uman, Sept 28 (Interfax-Ukraine) – According to unofficial reports, 24,404 Hasidic pilgrims from 24 countries have arrived in Uman, Cherkasy region, this year to celebrate Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year.

The press officer of Uman town police, Liudmyla Polischuk, said on Wednesday that the largest number of pilgrims had arrived from Israel – 23,000 pilgrims, 904 people from the United States, 116 from Canada, and 194 from France.

She also noted that the number of Hasidic pilgrims who arrived in Uman in 2011 was 1,000 greater than in 2010.

In 2011, Rosh Hashanah begins on the evening of Sept 28 and ends on the evening of Sept. 30.

An Interfax-Ukraine reporter said that Hasidic pilgrims were currently gathering for a prayer.
