You're reading: Police scuffle with protestors near Independence Square

Demonstrators scuffled with policemen before closing traffic on Nov. 22 along Kyiv's main Khreshchatyk.

Platoons of militamen rushed to prevent protestors from blocking traffic, but were overwhelmed by the sheer number of protesters.

"The police are beating demonstrators," yelled one of the protest organizers addressing about 5,000 demonstrators on the square, who began chanting "Police are together with the demonstrators" and "Interior Minister [Anatoliy] Mogiliov must resign."

Protest organizers said they planned to return to the Presidential Administration at 6 p.m. local time to repeat their demand that President Viktor Yanukovych veto the government’s tax code approved on Nov. 18 by the parliament.
