You're reading: Poll: Third of Ukrainians link Tymoshenko’s arrest to her political activity

Some 38% of Ukrainians polled by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS) believe that former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko was imprisoned because of her political activities.

According to the poll, 27% of the respondents believe that Tymoshenko was sentenced to imprisonment for criminal offenses, 19% said that this was triggered by the political and criminal activities of the former prime minister. Some 16% of those polled were undecided.

"Thus, more than half of respondents – 57% – do not exclude political reasons for the imprisonment of Tymoshenko, and at the same time, nearly half of voters – 46% – do not exclude the presence of criminal reasons in this," the institute said in a press release.

Most respondents from Ukraine’s western and central regions believe that Tymoshenko was jailed for her political activities, while those from the country’s southern and eastern regions believe that the former prime minister is behind bars for criminal offences.

The study was conducted on Nov. 4-15, 2011.

A total of 2,037 respondents aged over 18 from all Ukrainian regions, Crimea and Kyiv were interviewed.
