You're reading: Popular local online news publication blocked in Crimea

On January 29, 2016 the popular news website Sobytiya Kryma (www.sobytiya.info, news of Crimea) was blocked, social network users have reported.

The website said that it was started being blocked in Crimea by Crimean providers.

If an attempt to get in the website is made, a message that “access to the requested resource has been denied” appears. The website is included in the Unified Register of Domain Names, Internet Website Page Locators, and Network Addresses that Allow to Identify Internet Websites Containing Information Prohibited for Distribution in the Russian Federation.

In autumn 2015, the Federal Service for Supervision of Communications, Information Technology, and Mass Media of Russia (Roskomnadzor) notified the editorial staff of Sobytiya Kryma that the access to the website on the territory of Russia is denied.

On January 29, 2016, Roskomnadzor sent the similar letter to the editorial staff containing the absurd requirement to delete the main page of the website, as it allegedly contains information calling for mass unrest and extremism.

The website has the largest audience in Crimea (over 300,000 out of 500,000 people a month) among Crimean independent media.
