Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has signed law No. 1601-VII "On amending the law of Ukraine 'On Unified State Demographic Registry verifying Ukrainian citizenship, certifying the identity or his/her special status'" that allows including fingerprints into international biometric passports.

According to this law, fingerprints are defined as a piece of basic biometric data on a person and they will be included to a contactless electronic card storing documents for travelling abroad. This will allow identification of a person during border crossing.

“The law will create legal basis for digitalization of fingerprints and including them to a contactless electronic card [that will be a part] of a Ukrainian citizen passport for travelling abroad, diplomatic passport of Ukraine, service passport of Ukraine, sailor’s id card, crew member’s id card, stateless person’s id card for travelling abroad and refugee’s travel documents,” reads the statement by the press service of the president.

This document will allow meeting recommendations of European experts regarding liberalization of the EU visa regime with Ukraine.
