Presidents Petro Poroshenko of Ukraine and Sauli Niinisto of Finland spoke by telephone to discuss progress in the implementation of the Minsk agreements on Donbas.

Poroshenko noted the worsening security situation in the east of the country and stressed the importance of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) deploying a police mission in the region, the Ukrainian president’s press office said on June 29.

“For his part, the Finnish president expressed support for the continued sanctions against Russia over its failure to implement the Minsk agreements,” the press office said.

Poroshenko and Niinisto also discussed a number of issues between the European Union and Ukraine.

“In particular, President Niinisto noted that visa-free travel for Ukrainians must be introduced without delay since Ukraine has met all necessary preconditions,” the statement said.

The parties agreed to deepen the bilateral dialogue, in particular, on the Ukrainian president’s next visit to Finland.
