You're reading: President proposes to set up five wholesale agricultural markets by autumn

Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has said that five wholesale agricultural markets should be set up in Ukraine's biggest cities by the end of the year.

"Five wholesale agricultural markets should be created in Donetsk, Lviv, Zaporizhia, Kharkiv and Kyiv by the end of the year, under control of the government and with the united efforts of the authorities and private businesses," he said during a meeting of the Economic Reform Committee in Kyiv on Tuesday.

The president charged Ukrainian Agriculture Minister Mykola Prysiazhniuk with resolving the issue by the end of summer, so that the wholesale markets could start working in autumn.

"I’m expecting a report from you," the president said.

Yanukovych added that the implementation of agriculture and land reform was one of the key priorities of the state this year.

The president stressed the necessity to gather "record harvests" and introduce technologies maximizing the terms of storage of the harvest.

"We need to restore old storage facilities for our vegetables and construct the new ones, modern and super modern. Infrastructure is the key to success," the president said.

According to the Ukrainian president, under such conditions prices for agricultural products "will not rise above the clouds."
