You're reading: Prosecutor General suspects DPR leaders of setting up terrorist organization, coup attempt

The head of the Supreme Council of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic (DPR), Denys Pushylin, and DPR prime minister Oleksandr Borodai are suspected of having committed a number of crimes, Ukraine's Acting Prosecutor General Oleh Makhnitsky said on June 10.

“It was established that in March – May 2014 these individuals committed deliberate actions aimed at setting up the terrorist organization, “The Donetsk People’s Republic,” whose activity consisted of committing acts of terrorism, intimidating and killing civilians and seizing administrative buildings. This, in turn, led to destabilization of the socio-political situation both in the region and across the country as a whole,” said a spokesperson for the Ukrainian Prosecutor General’s Office.

On May 2, 2014, Pushylin was put on the wanted list and, following a prosecutor’s request, a court sanctioned his arrest for the purpose of considering his remand into custody, prosecutors recalled. A similar request has now been prepared with respect to Borodai.

The actions of Pushylin and Borodai have been qualified as “the committal of actions aimed at forcible changing or toppling of the constitutional system or takeover by force”, “the committal of actions aimed at changing territorial borders or the national border” and “setting up, and membership in, a terrorist organization, organized or other assistance to terrorist activities.”
