You're reading: Pyatt says US policy toward Ukraine to remain unchanged

U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Geoffrey Pyatt expects that the U.S.' policy toward Ukraine would not significantly change after presidential elections in his country.

Taking questions from participants in an annual conference on democratic governance organized by the International Republican Institute in Kyiv on April 1, Pyatt admitted that some odd things might be said during the election campaign, but insisted that, after the elections are over, no dramatic changes would take place in Washington’s approaches.

If Ukraine demonstrates progress, the next U.S. president, whoever this is, will continue to see strategic interest in keeping the U.S.’ policy toward Ukraine the same as it has been over the past 25 years, Pyatt said.

This includes support for Ukraine’s sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity, and the U.S.’ long-term goal to see Europe free, and safe, cannot be achieved until Ukraine obtains this status, Pyatt said.
