You're reading: Pyatt: US not recognizing any results of Crimean referendum

The United States is not recognizing the results of any referendum about the future of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Geoffrey Pyatt has said.

He said in Kyiv on Monday that the United States was not prepared to recognize the results of the so-called referendum, which is to be held in six days.

Pyatt said that the United States continued to consider the Crimean peninsula as a part of Ukraine.

The referendum in Crimea is scheduled for March 16. Two questions will be put up for the referendum, in particular, “Do you support Crimea’s reunification with Russia?” and “Do you support the restoration of the Constitution of the Crimean Republic dated 1992 and Crimea’s status as a part of Ukraine?”

The Ukrainian authorities and the international community declared the illegality of the referendum. In addition, the Ukrainian courts stopped the decision to hold the referendum in Crimea.
